Connecting TNFD’s LEAP Approach with ISO Standards

The world is not waiting for more tools. It is waiting for the courage and discipline to use the ones we already have to accelerate the transition to a sustainable world. Today’s wisdom lies not in invention, but in the precision with which proven standards are implemented. That is why TNFD becomes far more practical when its LEAP approach is connected to familiar ISO standards.

LEAP (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, and Prepare) is the practical backbone of TNFD. It gives companies a clear way to trace where nature enters the business, where dependencies become vulnerabilities, and where impacts may turn into financial or operational risk.

The journey starts with Locate. This is where companies map their operational footprint against ecologically sensitive areas, not only across owned assets but also across relevant parts of the supply chain. A company cannot manage what it has not first examined carefully. ISO 14015 provides that early discipline by giving shape to environmental due diligence. When impacts run far beyond the company’s own boundary, ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 help extend the view across the life cycle.

Then comes Evaluate. This is where a company measures dependencies and impacts in a way that can stand up to scrutiny. ISO 14008 provides a framework for monetary valuation of environmental impacts, while ISO 14007 helps organizations determine and communicate environmental costs and benefits.

The hardest step is often Assess. Environmental findings must be translated into business risk, not left as a separate sustainability exercise. ISO 31000 is useful here because it helps nature related issues enter the same decision room as finance, operations, and strategy.

Prepare is where analysis becomes action. It leads to response plans, governance follow up, and disclosure. ISO 14031 plays a different role. It helps organizations build a more disciplined approach to evaluating environmental performance. ISO 14063 then carries that work into communication, so that strategy, policy, and performance are not only managed, but also explained clearly.

Behind the process sits a quieter foundation. ISO 14001, ISO 14002-1, and ISO 14004 help ensure that environmental management is not treated as a side exercise, but as part of how the organization actually operates. Where biodiversity and nature related dependencies become more material, ISO 17298 helps bring those issues into business strategy rather than leaving them at the margins.

Nature no longer sits silently behind the scenes of business, but breathes life into the numbers on our balance sheets. The integration of the LEAP method and ISO standards transforms the green narrative into a justifiable sustainability argument.
